Abide With Me

(video below)

Abide With Me
Lyrics: Henry F. Lyte, 1793-1847
Music: W.H. Monk, 1823-1889

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
change and decay in all around I see;
O thou who changest not, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

John 15:4-11 (New American Standard Bible)

"Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.

I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.

Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.

If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.

These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full."

After asking Libera on their official MySpace page about the girl in the scarf in the background images, I received this response: "This video was from a Songs of Praise programme in 2004 to commemorate an anniversary memorial of the holocaust. The girl on the wall is called Krystyna who was taken to Auschwitz and after five months then killed in 1943 and was chosen to represent the thousands of children who died in the camps."

That story is also told here on YouTube. Polish Krsytyna Trzisvewska was 13 years old when she was taken to Auschwitz on December 13, 1942 and died five months later on May 18, 1943.
